Exit Caley Hall to the left and follow the coast road for approximately 14 miles (around 25 minutes). On reaching Holkham you will see The Victoria Inn, here you can chose to go left to the beach or right into the Holkham Hall Estate. We chose to head into the estate as the children were desperate to go to the Woodland play area. Driving down through the beautiful park is a real picture, there are herds of deer roaming freely and there’s a real sense of tranquility. As you approach the parking area you are greeted by a friendly person where you pay the £4 parking charge (it’s cashless payments only, they are equipped with card machines that actually work out in the sticks which amazed me) and are directed to a parking space.
There’s miles and miles of beautiful vast parkland to explore but we headed straight to the Woodland Play area. Here we were greeted again by a lovely young lady who explained that they are only allowed 60 people at a time in the playground. She asked all the children to sanitise their hands and then ‘clicked them in’. She asked us to let her know when they were ready to leave so that they can be ‘clicked’ out. It’s a really great system and we felt happy letting the children have free run while we waited outside (we had two 9 year olds and two 8 year olds). They had a fantastic time while we enjoyed a coffee and some mineral water. I have to say we were very impressed with the cans of water, it felt strange drinking water from a can but they are one of the many things Holkham encourages as part of recycling and sustainability. They are fully recyclable so an excellent alternative to plastic bottles. Food and drink can be purchased from just outside the play area and there are also toilets close by with lots of sanitising stations.
It was nice to see the new ropes course open and it’s pretty reasonable at £18 per person. (I think you need to pre-book online for this). After enjoying a picnic in the grounds we had a few games of rounders and then walked along to the house and lake. We didn’t visit the walled garden this time but I’m sure it’s well worth the small charge to have a look around at this time of year. Holkham is also hosting ‘Feast in the Park’ every weekend in August which looks fab. More information can be found here https://www.holkham.co.uk/stay-eat/feast-in-the-park
